WordPress MU & BuddyPress & bbPress logos combined

Now we’ve configured Nginx for WP Multi-User, adding BuddyPress is as simple as adding a plugin. To configure bbPress to work alongside is even easier.

If you’ve not yet tweaked Nginx to serve WordPress MU you should follow Configure Nginx for WordPress MU (benchmarked fastest caching).

.. That having been followed, we’ll add BuddyPress, then bbPress. There’s nothing very special here so expect no tricks. It’s silly simple!

Adding BuddyPress to WordPress MU on Nginx

Goto WP Admin Dashboard > Plugins > Add New.

Enter BuddyPress in the search box, hit return and from the search results, click Install next to, guess what, BuddyPress.

Once downloaded, DON’T activate it yet (ie, ignore the activation option on the plugin download progress page). Instead, goto your plugins page and look for the entry for BuddyPress.

You’ll see:-

Please sign up for automatic premium content access.

Just $15/year* will save you hours, maybe days!

Alternatively, the vpsBible forum is free and you are welcome.

.. if this were regular WordPress you’d click on Activate. But there have been problems reported with accessing the BP Admin pages if you activate that way (don’t ask me why!) so instead click on:-

So that was hard, huh :P

Activate bbPress aka BuddyPress Forums on Nginx

If you’ve ever deep-integrated bbPress on WordPress (as is the case on this site), you’ll know the procedure is a right royal pain. And on Nginx? Even worse!

Fortunately for you, with bbPress, those chaps at Automatic seem to have worked the ruddy oracle, and the process is oh-so-simple that I feel a little guilty even writing it up.

Goto WP Admin Dashboard > BuddyPress > Forums Setup > Set up a new bbPress installation > Complete Installation

Er, thassit. It’ll work out of the box.

Want bbPress on regular WordPress, else as a standalone forum, running on Nginx? Grab an RSS feed or email updates .. I’ll be posting up my integration guide and rewrite rules here on vpsBible shortly. (Or if this post is more than a couple of weeks old, run a search because it could be here already.)
