Can someone explain to me how to upgrade Wordpress?

I tried using subversion, but got nowhere.

I tried using the bashr command and got a shell fork.

I tried isolating the two commands in the bashr file, to permit me to upgrade, and it kept causing an error....

Would really help to have a bit more clarity on this...cheers

What would people suggest for a system of rebuilding your site in one place, whilst keeping your existing site up, and then deleting the old and transferring the new seamlessly?

Is the best way to build the site in a virtual server environment somewhere(?) and then going into ftp and pulling out old files and dropping in new?

I have set up a CName record at domain registrar for the server domain on which WPMU is installed (say domain.com). I then get blog owners to create CName records for their new domain to point to WPMU domain.com (and also doing the same in their site's (subdomain.domain.com) backend.

Any help appreciated.

Apologies if this is answered elsewhere, but my head is struggling to get around this on WP Permalink settings page:

If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . /index.php [L] </IfModule>

Am I correct to assume I just need to add something to /usr/local/nginx/sites-available/mysite.tld? And if so, can anyone help me with how to go about converting those rules for Nginx please?

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to remove the restrictions on the Nginx user?

The bash script under "WP Upgrades and Plugin Installs Assistance" makes my server go haywire. Tried it twice. Edited the 2 variables, added it to the bash file, ebrcupdate and BOOM!!! the CLI loops with errors indefinitely with no way to escape. I had to shutdown and restore a backup both times. Should I have done something else with the bash file?

On top of that I do not choose to use WP Super Cache. I am using W 3 Total Cache. It needs to be able to write to the cache on an ongoing basis, and cannot do so with the draconian restrctions currently in place.

Please tell me how to remove them. Thank you.

P. S. I am not on Linode I am on VPS.net. I had to set up my own vhost file and rewrite includes to get my domains working.

derek on "NGINX and W3 Total Cache"

I'm using the development version of W3 Total Cache, which has added nginx support.

Basically, it wants to write to an nginx.conf in the www root directory. Given that nginx (setup via your tutorials) isn't looking there for anything, these parameters are ignored.

So my question is whether I should manually add the rewrite rules to the domain specific nginx config file, add the www root directory as a symlink in the main nginx.conf, or just move the domain specific nginx file over to the www root and let w3 total cache automatically write to it when it needs to (minification, header expires, etc).

Are any of these methods preferable? Is there a security concern putting an nginx.conf in the www root directory? Thanks.

Here's an example of the code it wants to add to nginx.conf for browser caching:

location ~ \.(css|js)$ {
expires 86400s;
add_header Pragma "public";
add_header Cache-Control "public, must-revalidate, proxy-revalidate";
add_header X-Powered-By "W3 Total Cache/0.9.1.4b";
}

If you plan on using Drupal 6 (because it has a huge number of functional modules), you'll want to run PHP 5.2 instead of 5.3. If you haven't already installed 5.3, just replace the 5.3 references with 5.2 latest version, and you'll be fine.

If you've already installed PHP5.3, you can install PHP 5.2 alongside it. Just use --with-prefix to install PHP 5.2 into a specific location. (actually, that's a good idea for mysql and nginx as well, because you can install multiple versions side by side for testing when upgrading.

Also mysqlnd does not work with 5.2, so you have to specify the path to mysql_config.

Finally, if you install suhosin or xcache, just change
1. phpize to /fullpath/to/5.2/phpize
2. ./configure to ./configure --with-php-config=/path/to/5.2/php-config

One other thing is that by default, php will overwrite the /etc/init.d/php-fpm file, so you might want to back it up first

Good evening folks.
I was very enthusiastic about Nginx untill I found out that it has a different mod_rewrite equivelent compared to Apache. That is a big problem for me due to fact that I primarily use wordpress with few unique plugins that use .htaccess excessively.
So I was wondering if there is any module or hack to enable all the wp plugins still work ,or make Nginx read .htaccess

in my /opt/nginx/conf/nginx.conf but to no avail.

Thoughts anyone?

The current writeup for Wordpress Sub-Sites sets the Server Name in the vhost as someDomain.com

Unfortunately, I want it to go to http://www.somedomain.com

Can someone tell me what I need to do with the vhost to achieve this?

When I do wpupgrade, I'm able to activate the plugin through its setting, but when I click again on the setting page, it goes back to OFF and wouldn't stay enabled.

When I do wpsafe back, it won't let me access the plugin's setting page saying that the folder isn't writable

I followed the tutorial step by step and even tried doing another fresh install and yet again, same problem.

Thank you

Hi,

I've got an account in Linode to host a blog. I had Ubuntu+Cheroke+WordPress on it and it has had several problems (504 Gateway timeouts), so I tried to apply some of your methods to reinstall everything.

I followed two of your guides. This one to setup a LEMP system (http://bit.ly/b53Jsd) and this one (http://bit.ly/cVFz6B) to setup the WordPress CMS.

Both of them with the scripts modified as shown on these guides.

The new wordpress blog works as expected, but obviously with no posts.

And here comes the problem. I've made a backup of my 'old' wordpress database with the typical

mysqldump --add-drop-table -p MYDB > mydb-backup.sql

And when I try to restore that DB into my new WordPress system (on the second configuration profile, with NginX) the blog doesn't load (it shows a blank page) but, what is even worse, I even can't login as admin.

I use the same credentials I used on my 'old' Wordpress site (that should be inherited by the new one), by nothing works. I even try the 'Forgot your password?', but it never sends an email with a new one.

I've copied all the wp-content directory from the old to the new WordPress installation, I've tried to set user:group to www-data:www-data and USERNAME:www-data (my vpsUserName), but nothing works: it's impossible to login.

I'm desperate :(

Hi

I've followed the script for installing WordPress, but I can't upload files:

"The uploaded file could not be moved to /home/myname/public_html/mydomain.com/public/wp-content/uploads."

I created the uploads folder manualyl so maybe the permissions are wrong?

Any chance the script could be amended so it automatically creates the wp-content/uploads folder with correct permissions?

I also notice the script doesn't create the salts in wp-config.php - it would be a really welcome addition if it did this!

Cheers
Simon

I entered all my database info on the DB configuration page. click on "save and continue", page refreshed but nothing happened. still on the same page and there's no error message. I checked my database, its empty, tables didn't get created.

I couldn't figure out what the problem is. then I did a test, enter the wrong password this time, got error message saying "cannot connect to the database".

first time, i test it, theres no error message, I believe it connects to the database successfully. please help me to figure out why theres no tables in the Database. I am using "root", it has full privileges.

Hello, first of all I would like to thank you for this great tutorials.

I was moving my site from shared to vps and followed all your tutorials. I was running 2 blogs one is on root and other one is on sud directory

Ex -
max-musix.com
max-musix.com\p*rn

So I setup two blogs with nginx, max-musix.com is working fine but max-musix.com\p*rn is generating 404 error on single post pages. and i changed the permalink structure to Default now its working.

It will be great if you can suggest me how to get my old permalink structure back.

Thanks!
