Always tricky. Figured it out so only one db connection with individual users in each wordpress instance. Sometime I have to ask a question publicly so I force myself to answer it.

mysql> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON yourDB.* TO gurudawn@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'xYZvhz8(Xx=QF3620s';
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)

Change in wp-confiq.php and Bada bing:)

So I love scanning the forums and found a lot of gold nuggets along the way, really appreciate the VPSBible Guv, cuz it really is just that. As things change slightly I have to review my security roadmap, and here's my biggest "to do" this summer:

One one Linode 512 I have 8 wordpress instances, each set up successfully using the scripts from the Bible. One thing I overlooked.... is that on each and every install I used the same username and password for the databases so if using a phpmyadmin you can see every database with one login. I've found this to be a security hole and my question is simple. I understand I can change the username and password in wp-config. Of course I don't want to create 8 users on the machine. The "hole" is that there are plugins out there that are similar to phpmyadmin. So, if had a cohort with admin privileges he/she could install such a plugin and "see" ALL the db's. If I put a new password in wp-config, how do I also update the mysql password in the cli <mysql> and is this going to solve the issue?

!LOL! Wulfeous ...

That is odd.

Your A record is the key, bin the C cos it's unnecessary ... your vhost file looks fine.

I suppose the A record had been recorded at Cloudflare? (I kinda suspect this is an issue, else more likely a misunderstanding of some kind, on their server/settings.)

Er, I suppose you added the symlink! You know:-

ln -s /path1/pma/ /path2/pma

SqlBuddy is very nice, yes.

One thing, I'd strongly suggest adding SSL protection to this kind of thing, where you're flashing your database about "in plain text (yikkkkkeeeeessss!)"

... Just a thought, there's a tut here somewhere.

Still oddness. A different subdomain that I had setup alread, directs properly, and I was able to setup sqlbuddy on it, instead of phpmyadmin. It's not a bad replacement at all, actually. Worth checking out, if only for how simple it is to put into place and use.

I'm just still unable to set up new subdomains.

Pretty confused on this one. can't seem to find any similar problems to work an answer out of, either.

I've followed the phpmyadmin install guide of guv's, and am having trouble getting to it's page so that I can see my DB's.
On cloudflare's DNS settings, I have an (example) A type entry of phpma to subdomain to my ip address.
(I also already attempted changing it to a cName type that is a subdomain to mySite.com to no avail)

No matter how I put it into cloudflare, when i go to phpma.mySite.com it instantly redirects straight to mySite.com instead of going to the phpmyadmin login.

I am using 11.04, and it seems that the directories are a little different from the guide, but I'm pretty sure that I've accounted for it.

my   'etc/nginx/sites-available/phpma.mySite.com'    :

server {

    listen   80;
    server_name phpma.mySite.com;
    access_log /home/myUser/public_html/mySite.com/log/phpmyadmin.access.log;
    error_log /home/myUser/public_html/mySite.com/log/phpmyadmin.error.log;

    location / {
                root   /usr/share/phpmyadmin;
                index  index.php;
                }

    # pass the PHP scripts to FastCGI server listening on 127.0.0.1:9000
    #
    location ~ \.php$
    {
    fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000;
    fastcgi_index index.php;
    include /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params;
    fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME /usr/share/phpmyadmin/$fastcgi_script_name;
    }
}

I really don't see why I'm being redirected to the main site. Any idea's?

It's a damn exciting reworking of the traditional relational db and it doesn't rely on SQL query lingo, hence 'No'SQL. It's wrapped into many db solutions, say Mongo or, for Amazon's solution, Dynamo.

I'll be adding it as an option here, frankly only when I understand it better cos it's not necessarily a better choice (MySQL can be used as NoSQL, is another option, they can be used together too, then there's more traditional stuff like Postgre as a relational alternative (MySQL is relational, huh)).

... what is best will depend on your specific data requirement, this is the key.

But on balance I'm still happy to wait ... the non-relational terrain is maturing fast now but few would have said that a year ago.

As an aside, but potentially a very important one ... all this is just as well, IMHO, now Oracle bought MySQL, last year was it, or 2010 ... not sure I trust Larry Ellison with the world and his database!

hey Marcus ... this is actually quite a detailed topic but here's something to start you off:-

You should have a unique, non-root user with a unique password (used nowhere else) to manage each db instance. In other words, you're throwing up fencing and, if hacked, there is damage limitation.

Re the root user, you can change the name, which is sensible. Most importantly, the root user should have a unique password.

There are some special character issues with db passwords but, for each, at least use something super-scrambled like "fN6zEHhedq2YPnUgtQjcaSqR".

... that's 24-char, excessively paranoid perhaps but why not?

** I'd recommend playing with a development MySQL install - say on a local virtual clone of your VPS - before adjusting your production db users, so as not to lock yourself out or have downtime. The commands are well-documented via the big G :)

I'm having this problem and more! I'm a total noob to VPS and secure WP installations and losing hair by the minute with numerous re-installs. I got your book, Guv, WordPress Ultimate Security. And trying to catch up fast bc I'm working for a client and way behind schedule. I really need a hero right now, every instruction I try to implement results in database errors and/or 500 internal server errors. Can you, or someone, help me figure out what I'm doing wrong? host: ipower; unmanaged VPS with VHM and cPanel, RapidSSL Security Certificate.

guvnr, this happened again so I looked deeper, and I realized it was access.log that became 18gb every 3 months...that was why mysql wouldn't start.

sudo apt-get remove mysql-server libapache2-mod-auth-mysql php5-mysql
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get install mysql-server libapache2-mod-auth-mysql php5-mysql

I ran into this issue as well on 2 different installs. This worked for me to get it to kick up reliably after reboot:

I edited /etc/init/mysql.conf and commented out this:

#start on (net-device-up
#          and local-filesystems
#          and runlevel [2345])

...and changed it to just this:

start on runlevel [2345]

Maybe an issue with some OpenVZ setups?...because that's what both problems happened on and just thinking about the network differences between the two platforms. With Xen though I haven't had a problem.

resolved. I ended up rebuilding the linode, lol. pretty sure it was a problem with php.ini pointing to a non-existing web root.

Guv, the guide was going well until we got to the php-fpm/fastcgi section. The flow breaks down and on my inital go I got discombobulated. Ultimately I installed nginx via the repository they show on their main page. Then I used a very clean domain.conf in sites-available. So far so good!

I should also mention I opted to have sites located at

/home/public_html

I did not use '/home/USERNAME/public_html

Could this be adding to the problem?

I followed the guide and got php-fpm working in my multisite arrangement. Websites came up but I was unable to access phpmyadmin.domain.com without the error "No input file specified". I went back and installed fastCGI but I'm still having problems. Any ideas?

Dan, you could do that anyway .. it won't hurt but will ensure you have the correct startup entry for the mysql daemon. Then again, this is setup in the script.

Otherwise, it may be that you have a corrupted db. I'd recommend you take steps, at least, to optimize it.

The thing is, everything works fine for like a month, and when the traffic peaks a little, the database just fails for some reason. Then it's unable to start it in any way.

I couldn't afford to wait for your response so I ended up resetting the server all over, but service mysqld start doesn't work for sure.

I'll take a note of your suggestion for the next possible crash. Thanks!

Sounds like a socket issue Dan .. maybe just a missing symbolic link. First though:-

service mysqld start

??

if not:-

cd /var/lib/mysql/
ln -s /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock mysql.sock

Howzat?
