Basically Pooya, it's too early to upgrade to 5.4.0, unless you want to get involved creasing out the bugs.

We should readdress this in a few months time. Earlier is not sensible for a production server.

I've remastered docs to allow for 5.3.10 now (was PHP 5.3.4).

as you know php 5.4 has released and it will improve your website performance. here are some charts: http://ckon.wordpress.com/2012/02/07/php-5-4-faster-than-5-3/

my question is if it's safe to upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4 on a LEMP (guvnr edition) vps? anyone tried it yet?

Update two: That didn't fix the problem after all.

I finally traced it down to an issue with APC.

The solution lay in adding some config rules to APC's apc.ini (which was blank by default).

Adding the following seemed to do the trick though I did follow the suggestions for the rest of the config at the link below:

apc.include_once_override = 0

http://wordpress.org/support/topic/wp-301-apc-314-php-533-white-wp-adnmin-page

My server has been purring along without a hiccup for 3 weeks now.

Thought I'd report back and say that I fixed the issue.

After checking the /public/log/error.log in the site folder I came across a whole bunch of errors relating to various super cache files.

Somehow the permissions got messed up. After a quick bit of chmodding everything seems stable again.

A quick aside for the Guv (are you here Guv? Knock three times if you can hear us):

I seem to have most trouble with wp-supercache and directory/file permissions. Whilst not insurmountable this seems the clunkiest aspect of the whole vps set up as documented here (well for me anyway). The problems tend to strike when doing the "wpupdate" and "wpsafe" operations to do plugin upgrades, installs and so on.

If possible it would be great to see a mini tutorial on managing and mitigating file permissions problems.

I have multiple WP sites on my Linode.

All work fine and have been up and running for a while now without any trouble. I rarely modify the majority of them (mainly there for development).

I've recently set up a new blog which I add content to much more frequently.

Initially this worked without any hitches but something must have gone ping as occasionally php fails and I'm left with blank pages requiring a reboot. The other sites still work fine.

I'm guessing that the problem has something to do with wp-supercache, php and maybe file permissions.

Either way there is no obvious direct cause and effect other than if I leave my site alone it ticks along nicely. Once I edit something or add a draft post then at some random point afterwards the site goes down.

I'll post some error messages later when I get home.

Joe, you could run both, just as you could run, for instance, different web servers of whatever flavor for whatever groups of sites. This all becomes quite complex though, particularly from the standpoint of manageability (and therefore of security).

Without knowing precisely your requirements from site to site, your last point would tend to hit the issue on the head. In most cases you'd be best off doing that, disabling FastCGI and electing to run fpm for everything, for all your php scripts.

As for mcrypt, that can be installed easily enough with:-

sudo aptitude install php5-mcrypt

Let me give a little background first-
I have done all the vps tutorials and everything is going well with 3 Drupal 6 sites and 1 Drupal 7 site.

I was looking at the tutorial to install phpMyAdmin ... ok got that running but on my phpMyAdmin page I see 'mcrypt' extension is not installed...

This bugged me so I started to look at my php configuration. Well I am to the point where I have this stupid? question.

Can php-fastcgi and php5-fpm services run concurrently? Does that question even make sense? Because I see two services available and when I try to stop and start php5-fpm it fails (fails on both ends because it can't find a process -then fails to start)... The logs basically say "failed: Address already in use (98)" I'm guessing that's because the php-fastcgi service is running OR am I way off target here? (sorry for my ignorance if I'm way off target) Is it as easy as stopping one service and starting the other and then configuring the server to start one service in place of the other on reboot?

hi famfam, more likely this is a compatibility issue, possibly between fpm and your kernel version.

are any php scripts breaking?

in any case, try a simple update/upgrade and likely the issue will have gone.

So i know in some of the newer stackscripts you've got the php5-memcache extension as the default suggested cache...but does it actually do anything by itself without the memcached server also installed and running?

I'm just confused about php5-memcache and memcached, how they interact, and/or if they are totally dependent on each other.

Everything I look up it seems they only talk about them both working together. I can't find much on what php5-memcache does just by itself.

hi Paul, thought I'd sorted that, will take another look.

Is mcrypt installed on your machine? Try:-

sudo aptitude install php5-mcrypt

.. and restart PHP.

I came across this. After modifying the /etc/init.d/php-fastcgi because of reading here in the forums about a glitch with the file (which guv probably fixed but is not evident in the thread) I found I had a double line (duplicate) entry. You may want to go check/overwrite that again. It stopped the error from surfacing for me. I have another set of problems, about to post... if that helps

Any ideas? I've followed the PHPMyAdmin tutorial - got the browser login page with a warning - "Cannot load mcrypt extension. Please check your PHP configuration." (though there was an extra screen to accept an automatic config-db file which i clicked ok... maybe that was the problem?) Any help appreciated :)
