as you know php 5.4 has released and it will improve your website performance. here are some charts: http://ckon.wordpress.com/2012/02/07/php-5-4-faster-than-5-3/

my question is if it's safe to upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4 on a LEMP (guvnr edition) vps? anyone tried it yet?

I have multiple WP sites on my Linode.

All work fine and have been up and running for a while now without any trouble. I rarely modify the majority of them (mainly there for development).

I've recently set up a new blog which I add content to much more frequently.

Initially this worked without any hitches but something must have gone ping as occasionally php fails and I'm left with blank pages requiring a reboot. The other sites still work fine.

I'm guessing that the problem has something to do with wp-supercache, php and maybe file permissions.

Either way there is no obvious direct cause and effect other than if I leave my site alone it ticks along nicely. Once I edit something or add a draft post then at some random point afterwards the site goes down.

I'll post some error messages later when I get home.

hey folks,

I know some of you have had issues going the compilation route, as opposed to installing PHP, with the FPM FastCGI, using the repositories.

First, let me say, for most of us going the repositories route is the way to go .. it's easier to maintain.

It's easier to setup, you may think? Well, it was but today I wrote a script adn will be publishing it in a few hours time, well, by the time I've scrawled up my prose it'll be in the early morning .. so for those who are working inot the night tonight, wondering why some file isn't downloading or that something like mcrypt isn't playing fair .. have an early night and enjoy the script tomorrow.

It's:-

- PHP 5.3.5
- essential options
- highly configurable for advanced users
- run it and forget it for noobs
- tests perfect :)
- probably something else but the missus is dragging me out the door to watch some ruddy flamenco .. later :P

###

EDIT ..

Actually .. here it is:-

Let me give a little background first-
I have done all the vps tutorials and everything is going well with 3 Drupal 6 sites and 1 Drupal 7 site.

I was looking at the tutorial to install phpMyAdmin ... ok got that running but on my phpMyAdmin page I see 'mcrypt' extension is not installed...

This bugged me so I started to look at my php configuration. Well I am to the point where I have this stupid? question.

Can php-fastcgi and php5-fpm services run concurrently? Does that question even make sense? Because I see two services available and when I try to stop and start php5-fpm it fails (fails on both ends because it can't find a process -then fails to start)... The logs basically say "failed: Address already in use (98)" I'm guessing that's because the php-fastcgi service is running OR am I way off target here? (sorry for my ignorance if I'm way off target) Is it as easy as stopping one service and starting the other and then configuring the server to start one service in place of the other on reboot?

So i know in some of the newer stackscripts you've got the php5-memcache extension as the default suggested cache...but does it actually do anything by itself without the memcached server also installed and running?

I'm just confused about php5-memcache and memcached, how they interact, and/or if they are totally dependent on each other.

Everything I look up it seems they only talk about them both working together. I can't find much on what php5-memcache does just by itself.

I set up a Linode 768 a couple months ago using the Lemp stack lite here (Ubuntu, nginx, phpfpm, etc).
It's been going well except that I've noticed a pattern with memory use.
Over time--usually a couple weeks--the memory used (I watch this using HTOP) and swap slowly increase. Eventually my disk IO starts to get really busy.
I'm guessing it's swapping a bit heavily at that point.

By accident, I discovered that if I restart PHP-FPM, the memory used is immediately drops 50% and swap drops about 66%.
Slowly increases again over a week or two.

So... do I have some kind of memory leak? Don't know much about these things.

Hi Guv, I am running both the stackscripts, you just recently added like 10 Minutes Lucid 10.04 and wp stackscript. I am successfully running my wordpress blogs on my linode 360 plan with your guidelines. I think you have included php-fpm in that vps stackcript. I want to upload exported wordpress rss file size of more than 2mb (approximate 20mb size). I am totally lost to do this. Don't know where to change the file size as there is not conventional php.ini file here in the php-fpm. Please guide me. It is of urgent in nature.

I noticed that many php files were referenced throughout the tutorials, which ones should I edit? When I check the php info on my site it tells me the loaded configuration file is: /etc/php5/fpm/php.ini

The one referenced is in many php-fpm tutorials is: /etc/php/php.ini which does not exit on my server.

Which php.ini should I edit?

The reason I am asking is because I installed APC and I have to add something to the php.ini file.

Edit: I did a quick test and added it to the /etc/php5/fpm/php.ini file and restarted. Everything seems to work except when I restart php5-fpm it tells me that I do not need "extension=/usr/lib/php5/20090626+lfs/apc.so" as it is already loaded. :

Starting php5-fpm PHP Warning: Module 'apc' already loaded in Unknown on line 0 done.

I would like to know where it is loading from if it is not in the php.ini and should I leave it there? Also I see that suhoshin and imagick are being loaded but from where since it is not in the php.ini like APC?

I used "pecl install APC-3.1.4" to install APC

The errors seem to come in waves every few hours. There aren't too many of them but I'd like to eliminate them if I can. I *think* that they have something to do with my php5-fpm.conf file. My current settings (default from ubuntu 10.04 stackscript) are:

pm = static

pm.max_children = 10
;pm.start_servers = 20
;pm.min_spare_servers = 5
;pm.max_spare_servers = 35
;pm.max_requests = 500

Should I increase pm.max children? Should I switch to dynamic and enable the other variables? Or am I on the wrong track. The site is running on a linode 512 if that matters. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hello, earlier today I setup LEMP using the "LEMP Stack Lite Debian5 v2: PHP-FPM (Source)" script. It was great and did for me what I was spending massive amounts of time trying to do.

The server is working great. However, one thing I want is APC. I did a phpinfo() test and saw that APC was not installed.

I tried adding APC using: sudo pecl install APC-3.1.4

While it worked, it mentioned:
---
Build process completed successfully

Installing '/usr/lib/php5/20090626/apc.so'

install ok: channel://pecl.php.net/APC-3.1.4

configuration option "php_ini" is not set to php.ini location

You should add "extension=apc.so" to php.ini
---

I went to the php.ini mentioned in phpinfo, which is /etc/php5/fpm/php.ini and added the line.

I reloaded nginx: sudo /etc/init.d/nginx reload

APC was not listed.

Playing around, I noticed that if I made any changes to the php.ini file, such as memory limits or other things unrelated to apc, and reloaded the server, these changes were being ignored.

I was even stopping nginx, checking to make sure my site was down. Then started nginx to make sure it was being restarted, ensuring it was reading the php.ini file.

I know I am in the right php.ini file, (I even tried changing all of them to see if it worked too), and I know my changes are being saved (since I can close and go back into php.ini and see my changes)

Am I doing something wrong, do I need to do something special to make PHP see my php.ini changes, is there a known issue? Any help would be appreciated.

hey!

so i made a change to my max_execution_time variable in my php.ini settings in /etc/php5/cgi/php.ini

I restarted NGINX but the changes aren't showing up in the phpinfo() output. The changes are there in there when i check them out in nano so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Hello guv, php 5.3.3 is now out since a week ago, and now it includes php-fpm built in.

I have hold off from upgrading as I want to make sure I do this correctly.

Do you plan on upgrading the guide or a new guide on how to upgrade correctly for those of us using php-fpm separate from the vps guide?

Thanks.

I have just set up my linode vps via vpsbible (impossible without for me). Everything is great, transfered Wordpress site/database and all is OK. However, I have an ESSENTIAL plugin that will not work with PHP5.3 (at least not now). How can I downgrade to PHP5.2? I have tried the following and no luck.

http://randyfay.com/node/63

Before I keep messing around and trying more and more...is there any method someone from vpsbible has tried that worked?

Thanks!

APC is going to be included in PHP 6, and I'd guess it has been chosen for good reason... so I'm hopeful to see a tutorial for using APC instead of xcache

I installed php through the php-fpm method and installed xcache. If I make a change to a php document, the change doesn't show up in the browser until I restart php-fpm.

For example, if I change "test 5" the following php file to test 100, then refresh the broswer, it stays as test 5...even overnight. Changes to static files reflect immediately.

<html>
