as well as the PC, the router deserves special thought, by the way.

... being the entry point into the home network the router is your first defense (it could even be the sole firewall, for example) and is capable of a far broader range of services than just giving wireless or cabled networking.

Commercial routers are generally rubbish, not the hardware perhaps but almost always due to the limited firmware.

The answer is to either soup up an existing router by swapping the firmware for something like the Tomato alternative (this is like flashing a mobile phone) or else to buy a router with this kind of powerful firmware (you won't find decent kit like this in, say, PC World ... have a search or ebay it.)

Tomato is quite popular. I use, and absolutely recommend, the DD-WRT alternative:-

http://dd-wrt.com

... again, check out the wiki and, with that illustrating what is possible, don't be surprised when your astonished chin hits the floor ;)

here's a cool thread in the making ... cheers Carmine :)

i figure this is of interest to many of us who want to maximize tech for our lifestyle, business and security needs. how one goes about this, of course, depends on the requirements.

for instance, i'm currently setting up an e-home. here's my take on what that entails:-

1. running conduit (plastic tubes) in the walls from, say, the living room to a study and whatever other rooms to be networked. Within these tubes can be run whatever cables you need, so coax, a/v, Ethernet for networking and HDMI conversion, etc) ... this optional conduit is largely to keep things tidy and should allow for running future cable. Whatever cables you need to run .....

2. build a damn powerful PC (not hard to do, guides galore and much cheaper than buying some ready-made machine that's full of not quite right hardware and the usual junkware). This will be a chunky workstation, not one of these home media center, hifi-style PCs cos they're way too limited for multi-tasking and I don't want the thing in the living room anyway.

The idea is to take the web inlet via the modem and cable that to a router in the regular way. Then to network whatever machines in whatever rooms. The PC will be setup as the hub, serving for instance various items on your list. It'll connect online via a VPN for web security (256AES end-to-end encryption) and anonymity (ciao to the big brothers) ... doing things like syncing site backup, assisting remote home security and feeding home theater (guess I'll finally bin cable TV with this solution).

In terms of how to power all this, I'm as yet undecided but it will run on a Linux system like LinuxMCE. Maybe take a look and scour their wiki too:-

http://linuxmce.org/

When I've finalized my solution I'll write it up and let you know.

(hope you don't mind but i edited your post title to make it more specific)

Hey Simon,

Am using Wishlist Member, so Google that. It's automated with manual override so, for example, extending the memberships to 24 months for the New Site Offer, I just changed the value in the plugin options.

.. It was the best option, at least for vpsB and IMHO, a year ago .. that doesn't mean it still is, I should add, things change so fast.

It is very good though, as is their support.

Just wondering how you manage your membership/premium content on this website? Is it a WordPress plugin or something you wrote yourself? Is it all automated (i.e. if I don't renew my subscription am I automatically locked out) or is it (semi)manual?

Just looking at the options available for a potential job...

Cheers!

Hey Guv..

I recently purchased a subscription from this site. However I have yet to receive any conformation from your site. I did however receive conformation from Paypal that my payment was made. I am really on somewhat of a time sensitive schedule and would really like to have the access I paid for. I have heard a lot of positive things about your sites but I have to admit I am getting a little worried. If you could please respond as soon as possible it would be greatly appreciated. I can email you all of the information necessary to prove my payment

Like, say my blog url is example.com and any sample post in my blog is http://www.example.com/samplepost.html When I add feed at the end of the post url like http://www.example.com/samplepost.html/feed I get a 404 error. And this is happening in all the single post. Where as my blog main rss feed and comments rss feed are working fine. like http://www.example.com/feed and http://www.example.com/comments/feed

Please guide me to solve this issue.

I've just gone through the VPSBible tutorials and it seemed like everything was working fine on my new Linode server. However, I must have done something wrong, because now I cannot access any content - not even a simple html page will display.

All I get is the below message:

It works!

This is the default web page for this server.

The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet.

I removed the A record for phpmyadmin thinking maybe it was causing some kind of conflict. It didn't make any difference, so I created it again, but now I cannot access phpmyadmin.

Another thing that's really boring me is when I enter the command: hostname -f. I get hostname: Name or service not known, but the thing is I've rebooted the server and the reserve dns found my new hostname, so I don't understand why hostname -f won't work?

Would it be easier to just start from scratch than to try and figure out what is using no content to be displayed? Also to erase everything is it just a matter of reinstalling the OS again?

this is a great forum to be a part of mate. Single malt and AC/DC are part of the finer things of life. I am actually listening to TNT right now about to pour a dollup of Speyside right about now since I can't seem to finish the last bit to work ie get the easiest part to work working with google apps for domain verification and how to make the vhost file work so you get reverse those settings http://mysite and http://www.site.com
hell I can't even post a new topic in the email forum where I want to ask questions.. So I am gonna pour a big hearty glass, just smile and blast the AC/DC

well, not sure CentOS is an advantage or not but it's enterprise grade and stable. I got stuck with it by default but have been pretty happy with it. Ubuntu is a good server and shouldn't have a problem with running Virtualmin and if I had the choice I might've chosen another route. Maybe on my next vps setup?

@uraxs, I haven't actually tried this yet, so this is just a hypothetical question: according to Virtualmin install guide, they only mention installation on "Grade A Supported Systems" , with CentOS being one them. As part my "dabbling" with web-dev I've only ever tried ubuntu 9.10 server. Am I missing something: does using CentOs have an advantage?
Sorry in advance if this kind of question is not really applicable here.
