Update to this. I nixed the PHP-PHP-FM scenario and went straight for the plain vanilla "integrated" one and was able to get it running.

I'm stuck at the PHP-FM step. I'm on an ubuntu server. Have tried this process a few times and even deleted my debian server and tried it fresh on an ubuntu server. Changing the Export version to 5.3.5 makes no difference. Always get the same error message following. After spending about 6 hours on this.. realizing its not quite cut and paste here. I still feel like I'm on my own trying to figure things out. Please assist. Thank you.

***

Sorry y'all .. had a death in the family, there was that Christmas thing and to be honest I just needed some time out for a few days.

Please remember .. vpsBible is essentially a $15 footsure timesaver, not a $xx per hour 24/7 support service! I'll be adding a priority support service at some stage but, in the meantime, the value is in the heavily-tested, maintained and explanatory docs. I do what I can with this free forum but, as I'm the only community member who is ever really stuck in helping out, I do wonder if I should just bin it and concentrate on the docs.

Choitz .. I've deleted your duplicate threads.

Hi guv... I'm in trouble with this.

Following step by step everything looks fine but when the script is running show this:

NOTE: RUNNING ALL PARTS OF THIS SCRIPT IS RECOMMENDED FOR ALL MySQL
SERVERS IN PRODUCTION USE! PLEASE READ EACH STEP CAREFULLY!

In order to log into MySQL to secure it, we'll need the current
password for the root user. If you've just installed MySQL, and
you haven't set the root password yet, the password will be blank,
so you should just press enter here.

Well if I type the root password or press enter without password always the script show:

Enter current password for root (enter for none):
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

What do I'm doing wrong?

that's because you have to elevate permissions to those of the root user, by way of a safeguard. before commands requiring root you'd add:-

sudo [some_command]

.. and give your password when prompted.

Hi folks,

I'm prepping up for a big entry into 2011 and am tossing around a bunch of ideas as to how to "increase biz = increase output".

Probably it would help if I hustled some backlinks but the fact is I can't really be bothered. My intention is this:-

- I crack out tutorials
- you crack out backlinks :P

Of course, you don't want to time out on backlinks, why should you?

And, believe it or not, I don't want to charge for this content, although the missus says I have to so this is a difficult pull between earning a crust and open source love juice.

Maybe affiliation is the way to go?

Here's an idea .. please let me know what you think.

I offer you, say, 40% of the revenue on any folks that sign up through some unique referral code that you paste into, I dunno, your blog or some VPS forum, your forum signatures and so on.

That way .. you should pay for your membership, and hopefully more, quite easily and I'm drowning in dosh with no excuse but not to churn out zillions of tuts and scripts.

Fact is I know nada-de-nada about affiliation, except that I am affiliated to those nice Linode people and that covers my $500/year server/testing costs, which is nice.

.. So if any of you fine folks can point me in the right direction as to, say, decent WordPress affiliation plugins, else suggest a better business model, I'd be truly grateful.

I'll outline a plan around Christmas and spam y'all the details.

i don't have sudo installed either. tried to install, but since i no longer allow root to login, no can do. i guess i will delete the install and start over...but install sudo first. fyi, using chicagovps...super cheap for my lessons.

@Johan .. very odd that .. you sure you had to install sudo?? who's your provider (they really should include sudo as standard in their distro launch scripts, verrrry basic stuff!)

Haven't sorted the ssh problems yet, but the sudo-mystery is solved...

A clean Debian does not include the sudo package per default, so an

apt-get install sudo

might very well be needed on a slate Deb5

Now it worked, after I ripped out everything concerning users.

Dunno what it is, could the

cp: cannot stat `/etc/sudoers': No such file or directory
chmod: cannot access `/etc/sudoers.tmp': No such file or directory

have something to with it?

Thanks so far! I'm a few steps closer to a working VPS :D

Hey Karel,

The correct answer:-

if you are asking something as basic as that you should step through the bible .. you need to know more about a web server if you don't want to get hacked.

The poor answer:-

relaunch the distro. (takes a minute.)

:P

Ok I guess that's what happened. Can I just overwrite my server with the new script or do I have to start over on a blank server?

Hi Karel,

Maybe you used the new script before I changed the repository yesterday? .. in that case, sorry, fpm would not have installed, along with this dir.

With the script as is, there are 4 folders in /etc/php5 .. cgi, cli, conf.d and fpm .. just re-ran the script to be sure .. 8 minutes and just browsed to the site.

In my debian after using the new script there is no directory at /etc/php5/ called fpm.. so the above fix didnt work for me

Johan, please accept my apologies .. I forgot to add this dumb hack that Debian requires. You can just paste it into your terminal and reboot:-

sed -i "s/;pm.min_spare_servers/pm.min_spare_servers/g" /etc/php5/fpm/php5-fpm.conf
sed -i "s/;pm.max_spare_servers/pm.max_spare_servers/g" /etc/php5/fpm/php5-fpm.conf

.. otherwise the "pid" error message will remain .. that's a php bug with Debian (but not Ubuntu)

at this time Ubuntu is better supporting php-fpm, so frankly I'd go that way, use that script .. Debian and Ubuntu are basically the same anyway. Just that frankly Ubuntu is much better maintained, at least, it would appear, by the php5-fpm developers.

one thing you should know, with Debian you cannot at this time start/stop/restart fpm on demand.

.. that will change though with an update, but for now at least if you want a seamless php-fpm installation you'd do better to use Ubuntu 10.04.

That said, try the above and sorry for my forgetfulness with that snippet. I'll add it to the Debian scripts now.

BTW, if you can't login that's something to do with your ssh or authentication key variables.
