3rd party DNS faster? How slow is your DNS?
-
I have looked at DNS Made Easy and I think they have a way to split your requests off to two or three IPs. I don't know if that splits the requests an even 50-50 or 33-33-33 or if it sends people to the closest IP geographically?
I don't have THAT much traffic yet, but I noticed that some VPS accounts don't offer any DNS service--why?
I doubt most webmasters/bloggers ever thought of comparing the DNS performance of various hosting companies. Well, I have done this for years and DNS is still somewhat of a mystery to me. Until I read the DNS Made Easy website, I never considered that my host might throttle (prioritize) my website's DNS requests. Are we getting poor performance because of ignorance, taking for granted how DNS works, when DNS is really a core function of we do on the web? Maybe there is wisdom here I'm not aware of, is the DNS delay insignificant most of the time, or is it better to spend $15/year for DNS Made Easy--go with a 3rd party for DNS for your most popular sites?
Adding a half-second to each request doesn't sound like much if you're serving brochure sites for lawyers who don't care (for example) but if you serve pages with ads, those milliseconds add up--your CPM will drop a little each time your page takes longer to load and probably you will lose some traffic too. A 1% change there most likely means thousands of dollars gained or lost.
Can I assume Linode has fast DNS servers? I'm now wondering because I don't ever see hosting companies brag about fast DNS service.

i've not used either but most folks rate Zoneedit above DNSMadeEasy.
Linode have DNS servers and an *excellent* manager but I have no idea as to speeds.
I've been playing with Bind9 just recently because I want to offer a DNS tutorial for folks with no in-host DNS options .. but also for those wanting to bypass their provider's DNS option.
Grab a feed for updates about that tut PJ. Probably be out in a few weeks.
