403 error issue

MemberRather noobie problem, would love any help. I set up a Linode VPS following the tutorial a few months ago, and everything works fine, except for one issue. If I type in just the domain name of one of the sites I get a 403 error, but if I type in http://www.xxxx.com/index.htm then it works properly. I've tried every possible chmod combination I can think of, without any success.
It's probably something simple, but I can't seem to find the fix. Thanks!

hi kosmonaut .. what type of fastcgi are you using?
I would recommend using the FPM method now.
