Google Apps Alternative
-
I have tried half a dozen times to move my mail from 123reg to Google Apps, and have had 123 do it for me twice, but nothing works.
Is this a viable alternative?
1)Set up my domain at HG as an email account
2)Point my mail records in Linode DNS to HG?

sorry for delay, Marcus .. was here yesterday, just can't have been wearing my glasses!
I wonder if Hostgator may take issue with that? I don't know, but I'd look into that before having problems. I seem to recall looking into this precise scenario one time, I can't remember the detail but decided against that as a viable option, and think it may have been against HG's t's and c's.
Either way, wherever you point you mail, it still has to be properly directed.
The GA option works well provided you follow their procedure. Their docs could be clearer but if you want the easy free mail option (importantly where GA uses Gmail's spam engine to save you the hassle of maintaining, say, SpamAssassin) then it's worth having another go.
... This is a relatively tricky step so read my GA/mail tutorial carefully.
Then again, GA is the easy option, but not necessarily the best. If you want me to expand on this ambiguous statement you'd best tell me what you want to achieve, mail-wise.

I think it is a G Apps issue. There seemed to be a ton of people complaining about Google Apps not working.
I also found a few tales of a specific problem with 123.
In the end I gave up and just asked a technician to install email to my server.
All I want is a professional email address that is consistent in all my listings.

Yeah, google apps spam engine is worth the little bit of effort. Heck, I am even thinking about getting the bussines version and having GA handle all my domains.
@Marcus,
I have a number of domains that handle there own email, and the spam is a nightmare :(Have had very few problems once GA was set up :)

maybe related, there have been issues since the recent upgrade of GA.
I've got about a dozen domains with many more email filters routing through GA and they were all affected by the change, although this did settle down (about 2 weeks hassle though).
IMHO, there are four major reasons not to have your own email server, Marcus:-
- another possible exploit to hack
- one more thing to maintain
- Spam management
- drain on resources away from websites ** These days, server space is so cheap it's worth considering having a dedicated (well, VPS!) mail (and remote/piped logging) box.
Another email alternative is something like Hushmail, like GA but everything is super-encrypted.
