I have checked my test site using the Yslow plugin for Firebug and it tells me that gzip compression isn't happening.

All the necessary Nginx conf files are present and correct

Digging around the Ubuntu forum suggests that the necessary module is missing:

--with-http_gzip_static_module

Does this sound right? (it certainly isn't mentioned in the tutorials)
