hello from wonderland

I feel like alice in wonderland, seriously, i am soooo lost and confused. I have decided to stop procrastinating and learn how to put up sites on vps. but its been as confusing as i was afraid it would be, but finding this site has helped the fog clear a lot, I must say. But there is still some haziness. i now have 2 vps accounts, one for my business, the other for my nonprofit, community sites. the business site i want to run the drupal hosting panel called aegir, more specifically a version of aegir called octopus because it uses nginx. the other account will not be just drupal, but drupal, a tikiwiki, maybe a wordpress and a hotaru site. Not that i understand what i just posted...lol. after I post this I will be posting another topic about aegir. gosh I hope the guvnr is online this weekend.

When I first started using a VPS seriously, I was lost as could be. This site and the tutorials made the path to server administration clear as could be. I've been using it for several months now (or something like that), and can say that I can do most of the initial setup like creating users, hardening the shell, throwing up a firewall, editing my bashrc, and other tasks without the guide. Something I did was simply put together a stack, then delete it and do it again, over and over, until it started clicking and I knew what to do, and more than simply following directions, I comprehended and understood what I was doing.

this is the fifth day now, and i am stuck at compiling nginx. i keep getting an error. its driving me nutx.
you are sooo right, its amazing site. i would be completely lost it i hadn't found it, now i am just mostly lost, LOL.
I know you are right, but i dread the though of deleting it and doing it all over again and again. It would be like having multiple root canal.Posted 1 year ago # -

Shelley -- I noticed that you want to deploy Aegir for admin for your Drupal site. Boy, you may want to "do Drupal" without Aegir until you get the hang of the server set-up and admin, plus Drupal. I don't know if you are competent with Drupal, but it took me a long time to build a multi-site set-up for Drupal on an Apache OS on Windows Server. Even I have decided to put off Aegir for awhile. The documentation isn't that great for beginners. Just something to consider.

Shelley -- Are you using a Linode?

my apologies for not answering earlier. i clean forgot i had even posted this! lol.
i am seeing and answering this note at an interesting time. first off yes i am on linode, you mean the company, right? i am what you would call an eternal noobie. i have been messing with drupal for years, what do i mean by messing? basically downloading modules and themes. serious. i have put up a couple of test sites for a few months, but never a full on production site. i am notorious procrastinator. i have sites that are years in the planning. i dont have any excuses anymore. both linodes are up and operating! i did the traditional set-up as instructed by guv on my community account and i am ready to install my community sites. but the best thing is, wait for it....I HAVE INSTALLED AEGIR WITH SUCCESS! just happened monday! i cant believe it. and i have to tell you it is a BEAUTIFUL thing. its unbelievable how easy it is to set up a site with it. just put in a domain, click what kind of drupal you want and press create! unbelievable! its worth ALL the trouble, but the ironic thing is, its not that much trouble! in fact it was rather simple. clarification, i didn't install the regular aegir, i installed barracuda/octopus which is aegir/nginix.
i am going to put a post up on aegir sometime this week for other folks who are interested. right now i am trying to
back up
you are right are aegir documentation for beginners, its lousy. actually i think you are right, aegir is not really for beginners or noobs, its for uber geeks,if something goes wrong you literally have only a handful of people that can answer the question, since its a complex form of already complex software. but i was just too freaking stubborn to forget about it and move on. i am even going to learn drush.Posted 1 year ago #
