How to compile mod-deflate in to apache 2

MemberHi Guv and all.
I have an unmanaged server from one of the hosters with cpanel and whm installed.
It has a Centos 5.5 with apache 2.0.63
I know it's not really related to VPS bible but I looked all over the internet and all solutions I find don't work.
What I want to know is if I can update and upgrade apache to the latest version without breaking cpanel and whm installation and how to compile mod-deflate in to apache.I tried to load apache module but it bashing that module/directory doesnot exist.
Experts outt her eplease advise :-)
