nginx 404 Not Found error!!!

I want to redirect 404 error to my default index.html page at:
/home/$user/public_html/domain.ltd/public/index.html
I don't know which file I should edit?
1- /usr/local/nginx/sites-available/default? or domain.ltd
2-/usr/local/nginx/conf/nginx.conf
3-/usr/local/nginx/sites-enabled/default? or domain.ltd
???
I tried almost all of them bur with no luck...please need your advice!!!!
as usual I'm on linode 512 ubu10.04 32b

Same 404 ninjas acting here. Actually not getting access to folders on sites, and can't serve my main sites; only bring up 'original'/default index.html. I guess i have broken afew things. Where could he culprits be; i am guessing somewhere in the configuration files.
Help appreciated, if any one has encountered similar.
