When I try to execute the command, echo mail.waywiderweb.com > /etc/hostname, I get a message that permission is denied. What could be the issue? Thanks for any help, guv! And thank you for the walk-through! It's great.

try adding a "sudo .." in front Chad .. and thank you too.
