PHP BENCHMARKED: PHP-FPM vs Spawn-FCGI vs FastCGI
-
Great article as ever Guv but why didn't you do a little conclusion / round up at the end stating which YOU would choose as one maybe 'felt' quicker etc?

i guess i did sit on the fence!
then again, did you read:-
Compile PHP-FPM (PHP5) & MySQL for Nginx
.. i figured I'd love it up quite a lot there (it's hard to love up fpm much more than PHP themselves have, and my benchmarking shows why, huh?!)
but actually, the reason is because I wanted to keep this particular post quite laboratorial - if that's a word, aah, clinical, yes, that's it - whereas I have a post on the way which will act as a PHP Index, summarizing not only the install methods but also some of the key extensions (for caching and security, at first anyhow)
.. in that PHP round-up/signpost I've tapped out some pros and cons for each.
Personally though, as soon as I've tested how to migrate from regular fastCGI to php-fpm with no downtime, I'll be migrating my Linode to fpm .. AND I CAN'T WAIT!!!!
..well, I can wait, just getting a little excited.
As for the 'felt quicker' factor, dealing in milliseconds, its impossible to say. But what are milliseconds in a test like this, of course, should expand into clear and evident benefit for a bunch of sites receiving shedloads of hits.
