Prepare Linux Server for Email with Postfix - PROBLEM
-
Hi !
Ive followed the instructions for this section as per http://vpsbible.com/email/setup-postfix-email/ but im having some major problems making my changes stick :-(
What i see when i type
sudo nano /etc/hostname
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/8079/etchostname.png
What i see when i type
sudo nano /etc/hosts
http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/7209/etchosts.png
Now editing the hostname file is no problem only 1 thing to change ;p i save this file and move on to the 2nd.
This is where im a little confused. Firstly the text beside 127.0.0.1 is different in my file and secondly i do not have the 127.0.1.1 underneath instead as can be seen in my second img link i have
# Auto-generated hostname. Please do not remove this comment.
77.74.199.78 x.vpsf22f95ce.com xIve tried deleting the whole part from x to x and inserting mail@killboard.me but after i do the reboot and check again its back to the default hostname and both files are back to how they were.
As you can see the reverse dns part is fine
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/944/reversedns.png
Im very new to this and i had never touched linux in any form till last night but i managed the first 10 parts fairly straightforward.
VPS is running on ubuntu 9.04 LAMP

hi Brian .. sounds like something on the VPS server itself is overriding your changes.
Explain to your vps provider that you're trying to reset your hostname in your /etc/hosts file but, on reboot, it's being overridden ... and is there some setting they can change to stop that?
alternatively, they may say it's something you need to change in your VPS control panel.
do me a favor .. let me know what they say .. I've not seen this before but I'll bet it affects a few folks, so I'll amend the tut to warn about that.
who is your provider? ten to one there's a thread on their forum with precisely this problem!

Many thanks for the quick reply guv my provider is vpsville.ca and as you rightly stated there was an option in control panel called hostname which had the following inside.
Set Server Hostname - x.vpsf22f95ce.com
Are you sure you want to change the hostname of this server? This hostname is set on your server every time it is rebooted.
I must confess i hadn't looked in there simply as you say because i didn't expect such an option to be there !
many thanks once again for an awesome value guide that has been easy to follow for a non linux user (altho i am now going to put an ubuntu partition on my pc you have peaked my interest ;p)
Brian
Your prob going to hate me and cancel my sub but there is one further little snaggle im encountering ;p
When doing the post fix part at no point do i see the img at the top of the topic
http://guvnr.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/20090505_vps10/4.gifIt goes straight to postfix configuration with a blue bordered box
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/8288/postfix.png
with a solitary ok at the bottom that does nothing when clicked on and i cant seem to enter text anywhere

Just a small side note but when i try to fire up the nginx server i get
[emerg]: bind() to 0.0.0.0:80 failed (98: Address already in use)

[emerg]: still could not bind()however when typing my ip into my browser i get a white screen with it works! displayed which isnt what the guide says i should see ?

oh dear .. I mean, that doesn't look fun :P
i think this is another thing to do with your vps provider, and bind, which is a dns thing.
i would suggest to you .. show them this guide, tell them you want to fulfill it, and is there a problem? where are the conflicts?
i mean, are they offering you "unmanaged", cos they sound semi-managed, (and that's worse.)
do you understand what I mean? maybe I should blog this up. terribly opinionated, course!
lemme know Brian, your case sounds interesting ...

.. had a thought .. you're welome to email direct to me your login details and I'll have a (rather curious) peek at your VPS' control panel, and see what perhaps should be set up depending on what, and come back to you
.. you can always (and should) change the password after.

Many thanks for the offer ive sent mail with login details (tried the contact thing on the site but it had a fit)
Someone suggested something was allready running on the port or such nginx was trying to use but ive no idea if thats even possible with my current knowledge and it wouldnt answer the mail issue anyway ;p

If needed i can also let you have a look at my actually putty login incase there something ive made a complete mess of (although im pretty sure every pre this has gone fine)

Welcome to nginx!
I found another topic on forum regarding apache and upon following it and removing apache following a browser cache clear i know have the msg i should have.
Mail issue continues to baffle
It may be unrelated but the filezila and winscp both cannot connect using same details as putty
Status: Connecting to 77.74.199.78:54321...
Response: fzSftp started
Command: open "guvnr@77.74.199.78" 54321
Status: Connected to 77.74.199.78
Error: Connection closed by server with exitcode 128
Error: Could not connect to serverWinscp says
Cannot initialize SFTP protocol. Is the host running a SFTP server? and a msg about error 128 (sameone filezilla reports)

hey Brian .. ok let me get this right then, cos I'm just up here in Spain and maybe out of date:-
- bind message is gone (DNS sorted) .. you're getting It Works message now
- error 128 with FZ or WinSCPIs that it? Other symptoms?
And tell me, about my Contact message freaking out .. what browser are you using?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Hiya
Apologies for the confusion in last msg was late when i wrote it in the UK and it does read odd.
Position im now in is as follows.
1) Bind Msg is gone (DNS Sorted) after clearing browsers cache i now have the welcome to nginx msg so all is well there
2) Postfix same issue remains. (I.E i still dont get the img at the top of the section and postfix doesnt install)
3) error 128 when trying to connect by both filezilla and winscp with the full error msg's as per my last msg. I did however read this http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/red-hat-31/sftp-issue-on-rhel-5.4-779753/
and i can get in using winscp's scp mode just not using sftp meaning although i can see my files i cant transfer them to the server
-----------------------------------------
With regard to the contact msg im using the latest version of firefox if i try to use the contact facility on http://vpsbible.com or the blog, sitemap, faq sections i get a shortened mail box like this
http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/9171/mainpagesend.png
which if i send a mail gives this error
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/9026/mainpagemail.png
Topics,Forum,Requests give the extended mail send with spam filter as below
http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/2381/mailextended.png
Mails sent via the Topics,Forum or Requests section appear to send ok with no php error msg.

hey Brian,
have emailed you about this.
basically tho, I think these problems are due to a lack of compatibility between your setup and this guide.
you have a LAMP stack?
you should be able to install Postfix with:-
sudo aptitude install postfix
then test with:-
telnet localhost 25
and hopefully see something like:-
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to www .someDomain.com
Escape character is '^]'.
220 localhost.localdomain ESMTP Postfix (hostname)anyway .. lemme know what you find out from my questions in teh email
Tx for your feedback on that contact from .. appreciate that.

Ive ditched my vpsville vps and got myself a nice Linode one \o/
Ive also now found out what was wrong with postfix both on vpsville and on linode ! (for me at least it may be for others but im not sure ?)
image at the top of the topic
http://guvnr.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/20090505_vps10/4.gif
does not appear when running the command
sudo aptitude -y install postfix telnet mailx
the image that appears is actually this
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/8288/postfix.png
Requiring you to use right arrow/cursor to highlight ok in red then hit enter which gives the image at the top of the screen which you then highlight internet site right arrow again to highlight then right arrow again to highlight ok and enter.
This prob was the same issue i had on vpsville but as i've already paid to get a linode one ill put it down to experience ;p
However if this is standard it may be good to add it to the guide as being a total noob to linux (i.e id never touched it prior to this) I took the guide word for word and when i didnt get the image at the top initially canned the old vps.
I'm not grumbling linode is a far better package for barely £4 more a month and vpsville still had the sftp issues. Just if the process is as i experienced maybe i can save someone else the coffee jitters trying to work out why there failing ;p

cheers Brian .. am building a server tonight an d will pay attention to the Postfix step and change this piccy accordingly.
the key thing is to opt for the "Internet site" option
good luck with that linode .. i think you'll be very happy with them, cracking control panel, great forum and fast support

Hello, GUV, nice work.
I think the video on http://vpsbible.com/email/setup-postfix-email/ is gone. It seems to be corrupted.
Thanks,
Rogerio.Posted 2 years ago # -
Hi Rogerio,
