PuTTY in the Linux Guide
-
Hi Guv,
In "Harden the Secure Shell (SSH) & Create a Firewall" for Linux, at the end you refer to PuTTY.
Is there a corresponding Linux step here or can I safely ignore this?Posted 2 years ago # -
Just to add to that;
I tried logging in via ssh but get the folowing error;
ssh: connect to host xxx.xx.xxx.xx port 22: Connection refusedSo I guess I need to change a port config somewhere ...?
I have done this here; /etc/ssh/sshd_config
and
/etc/iptables.test.rulesIs there somewhere else?

hey Rich .. you can ignore that cos linux is far more straightforward with this stage .. hmmn, maybe I should clarify that a bit more.
re the ssh and ports, providing you have carried out all proceeding steps with acute attention to detail, it will work if you follow:-
Harden the Secure Shell (SSH) & Create a Firewall
..er, that my friend is a promise.
let me say, cos I know you're very very newbie from your emails, that this process - and server build process - has to be pored over with great patience and much coffee.
take it slow .. but sure.
come back with more queries though too.

Hey Guv,
Well, I'm new to VPS and to this process but I've been using ubuntu for 5 or 6 years and I'm familiar, tho not expert, with the CLI, so not that very very newbie. :)
I did follow your tut closely, I edited the port settings to a new number in the files correctly as I verified by checking over again. But now I can't login again.
ssh: connect to host xxx.xx.xxx.xx port 22: Connection refusedShort of flattening it all and starting again, which is doable (I'll learn more), what would you suggest?

My frank suggestion is, er, do it again! It will save you time and you will learn more. In fact - if it comes to it - once you've done these early stages a few times you'll find that, even poring over the docs, you'll be well into the series within about ten minutes.
This is common. No worries. First time for any of us involves a few false starts .. think I had about 4 or 5, one way and another, but then I was more newbie than you are now.

Yes, makes sense.
I'm not in any hurry for a job or anything, its all just a learning process.
Thanks for your input.
Cheers.
