Security issue
-
Hi all - noob here, loving Linux btw.
I had a long journey from my first vps with centOS installed last week and managed to navigate adjustments to the Ubuntu VPS setup guide with no help from my hoster (can't say I'm too impressed with them).
In short, they've emailed:
"We have detected that your VPS hosting space is inaccessible via SSH. We have been unable to investigate as it appears you have changed your password.
If you have enabled a firewall, please configure it to allow access to SSH from the following IP ranges:
10.0.0.0/8
62.128.153.112/29"
Can someone let me know if this is justified, since I think it kind of proves I achieved what I set out to achieve. My ssh2 keys are working fine with auto-login and I'm ready to steam ahead. To be honest Linode looks a hell of a lot easier and better supported, so I'd love the excuse to switch if they push this issue...Posted 11 months ago # -
@Paul .. what you can and cannot do with any give hosting plan is set out in the T's and C's. Some hosts are more stringent than others, particularly those whose primary focus comes from the shared remit who, for example, may not like it if you do things like scan your server for vulnerabilities (penetration testing).
Personally, I'd be keen to keep an *unmanaged* VPS host doing what you really need, for them to maintain a quality virtualized setup, ideally with a management panel that allows for DNS changes and maybe resource monitoring as well as for launching Linux distros. Other than that, a good VPS host should have no interest in your business.
.. that's my take, anyway. As for that email, it does seem odd. I guess it is really from them, is not a social scam? I'd email back and ask them why they want to know but, in fairness, they are welcome to their policies and you are free to walk ;)

Thanks Olly
Think I'll stick with 'em for now - I've been in touch and the account manager says it just so their monitoring servers can "detect any problems that could affect our server and your service".
From experience their vps sales are aimed primarily at IT admins who know exactly what they're doing, so I've bought the CentOS Bible for a bit of light reading ;)Posted 11 months ago # -
@the_guv... OK, I walked - have a $20 credit on me in a few weeks, this Linode kicks Easily's ass. Now I can actually get something done!
Many thanksPosted 11 months ago # -
