Setting up nameservers
-
I use a vps provider that does NOT provide nameservers.
Up till now I have used kloxo to install and manage my vps which works ok but is slow when managing a lot of domains or subdomains.
Anyway, I would like to create my own nameserver on the vps that I am hosting my domain on. I can easily create my nameserver registrations and point them to the IP at my registrar.
I would rather use djbdns, but I understand that most people cannot help with that since like many things in linux, it is convoluted and difficult to install.
I guess that leaves me with BIND, but I do not know where to begin to set up BIND on a LEMP server to allow access via domain name.
My domain registrar is set up correctly and I have ns1 and ns2 set up as nameservers at the registrar pointing to the correct IP of my vps.
How do I proceed from here. DJBDNS is preferred but BIND will suffice if someone can help.

hey Dave .. not really what you want to hear but I'm intending to tut up Bind9 and also automate the DNS setup using Bind in the stacks .. but realistically time is way to short to do that any time soon.
Bind can be a bit tricky .. you don't want to move to a VPS with a DNS Manager I suppose .. that would at least be best advice for noobs

Install Webmin and use it to configure BIND-it only takes about 60mb with BIND running!
Log into webmin and click "servers", choose "BIND DNS SERVER", create a master server (your domain) and add proper A, CNAME and NS records. Then, reboot BIND or your VPS itself and type "whateveryourdomainis.com" into your address bar and you should see your website!

Thanks for the advice guys.
I am very happy with my vps provider (after having tried several) so changing at the moment is not something would like to do.
As mentioned before, I have used kloxo which installs either bind or djbdns (it can be changed in the control panel)
Bind caused several problems over time and moving to djbdns solved those problems of name resolution. (and no, I dont remember the exact problems lol)
I tried webmin very briefly but I think that raw linux is only marginally more complex. Plus, you can only run Apache on webmin and I wish to run nginx.
I want to move completely away from control panels and be able to accomplish everything I want from the linux console or sftp.
Thanks anyway guys.

@Dave Nothanks, webmin runs on Nginx without any problems. If you still need help with custom nameservers, let me know.
