Too expensive :(

it's a shame that the membership is so expensive.... unfortunately I can't afford myself it (1 USD cost now about 3.35 PLN)

It's expensive, because nothing I've tried here (3 copy and paste tuts) has worked so far:
Compile & Install XCache on PHP-FPM
Compile PHP-FPM (PHP5) & MySQL for Nginx
How to Recompile PHP (from source) No DowntimeSave your money, use google.

Tex: What questions do you have, feel free to ask the forums. I followed the tutorials from setup to end and everything worked fine for me. Any problems I had the forum was gracious to help.
I'd be glad to try and help you.

That's very kind of you, Christine. I asked the questions yesterday: none of the lemp stacks work for me either, always failing with a "could not find libevent.a" error.
I think this is because my VPS provider only has 64 bit images?
I've been trying to get this to work for 2 days now. Extremely frustrating.

yeah! 64bit was a problem for me as well and I ended up switching my vps provider to Linode. Not an option of all I am sure.
However even with the problems I have encountered, I feel the $15 dollars was well spent because it still saved me tons of time.

I don't use linode i use dmehosting anyways depending on the linux build you have it may take some trial and error if you do follow this bible i would suggest you use debian 5 32-bit as it seems to work the best in my opinion.

"It's expensive, because nothing I've tried here (3 copy and paste tuts) has worked so far"
.. i notice from other threads that this did work
TT .. you've been using this site at length for months to the benefit of your web hosting company. how many VPSes have you set up usin this guide?
do me a favor, play fair m8 cos frankly you seem to type without thinking, both on this forum and to my personal email.
constructive criticism is useful, hotheaded frustration when something technical needs a tweak is out of order.

TBH, I only started using your tuts this week, even though I paid ages ago. And nothing I've used here has worked, probably because my provider only offers 64 bit images.
If you take days to respond to posts in your forum, you can expect us to get frustrated. There are many unresolved questions in this forum. I thought that you might cut those of us who have actually paid a little slack and actually respond to our posts.
Nevertheless, the fact still stands that your tuts do not work on Ubuntu 64 bit. So, for people like me who can't use 32 bit images, they're useless.
And, as far as my emails to you are concerned: of course I got frustrated! I've had to ask you to recreate my account four times because your registration system wasn't working correctly.

well, texotexo, don't know what to think. you say things have been working fine in other threads, maybe i dreamed that.
32bit is recommended, it says that, maybe could be clearer.
i recall you were dissatisfied before and asked for a refund .. which i issued, then you re-subbed.
anyway, you're right, this site is junk, just google m8.

Tex,
We have a saying in politics, not going to write it here as Guv won't forgive me, but it has to do with rodents and breeding. Anyway - I've used these scripts. They work beautifully, I recommended this resource to my own community and *they* have used them beautifully (after signing up of course!) so, and in consideration of 30 years software development experience, what you are facing is most likely a Fleshware problem. Very difficult to debug and almost impossible to analyze.

"If you take days to respond to posts in your forum, you can expect us to get frustrated."I think it's pretty clever that the_guv has 'productized' a service. The same service would cost big $$ if you were to hire someone, so for $15/year I don't think it's reasonable to expect him to be on call at all times.

Just adding a word to this topic. I originally setup a VPS using The Guv's standard guide before the Stack Scripts were released - on a SliceHost slice. Tonight I setup another on Linode using his Stack Scripts. 30 minutes total, a bit of tweaking needed as I'm running WordPress in multiuser mode. No issues, no problems, no complaints. Definitely more than $15 worth.
I have an idea on how to make the stack scripts even easier to use. I'll have a chat to the Guv and see what he thinks.

Of course what the_guv provides is more than worth the $15 - no arguments.
However I do understand frustratiions abour 64bit based systems as I have just been forced to use one on a VPS.net VPS. Don't misunderstand me though, I am not frustrated at the_guv but VPS.net making you use 64bit when there is simply no need for it on sites which will NEVER need more than a couple of nodes! All 64 bit is doing in addition to 32 bit is making me use more resources (nodes) to keep the sites running the same way.
In my case as the end user's aren't techy at all so I went for Apache (spit!) and the free ISPManager control panel for their 'admin'.

Got to weigh in here as well.
The Guv's info and guides have been worth a hell of a lot more than I paid. This site isn't just about having the perfect script to mindlessly setup a VPS. If that's all you're looking for, you really shouldn't be trying to manage a VPS. What this site does very well is provide an incredible amount of info, in one convenient place, that gets you going and well up the learning curve.
I also had many problems trying to setup on VPS.NET. I finally did, but only after going step-by-step through the script, and dealing with some other minor issues. Also, I was blown away by the memory usage. Not just the 64 vs 32 bit issue, but something else going on. I finally took the Guv's advice and switched to Linode.
Matter of fact, I feel this site is such great value I regularly buy the Guv a pint at my local pub. Damned shame I have to drink it for him as well!

@Lee - I'd not thought of buying him a beer and drinking it for him! Thanks for this tip!! :-)

Gosh, 15 bucks, several tips and anyone is worrying about value for money, really? Just reading through some of the tutorials is worth alot more than 15 bucks unless someone's time is worth much less.
Cheer up

@Benja: Right! This site is so amazing! With 15$ i have knowledge which money can buy :)

15 dollars is a very good price for this kind of thing. otherwise you are in a no man's land. posting on forums where people volunteer info and you may or may not get a response. or paying hundreds/thousands of dollars for personal service by experts. this is the middle ground, being able to ask questions to a subscribed web site. you are guaranteed to get some kind of answer.
