Ubuntu vs CentOS
-
Hi all - noticed that the guv's tutorials use Ubuntu as the distro of choice and am wondering what you folks see as the major benefits of Ubuntu over CentOS.
I've been using CentOS (I have RedHat roots) for a while and am hesitant about switching to a new distro mainly b/c I don't want to spend the time to get (as) up to speed on it (as I am on CentOS).
Would appreciate any and all thoughts.
Thanks!_Khalid

Hi there, all my servers have been centos up until I started using this website. I was like you a bit hesitant to switch but I have to say I have no regrets in doing so. Do not get me wrong, Centos is still awesome and I still use it, but ubuntu has offered me a lot of advantages when it comes to documentation for many tasks.
I am running it on a fairly large website and so far I have no complains.
The most important thing I would suggest you do is to double check your requirements such as the applications you will need on the server and make sure they are compatible/available for ubuntu. They most likely will.
Other than that, I really do not see any reason why not to switch.

hey kjhosein,
main advantage of ubuntu adn, to a lesser extent debian (tho they're basically the same) is how user-friendly the docs are, and how helpful the community is at ubuntuforums.com.
otherwise, centos is a cracker too.
one of these days i'll get round to benchmarking the two.
