Very Lonely on Switchlink
-
Hello peeps,
I've been hacking my way through the scripts <reinstalled the OS countless times> and this it the first chance I have taken to say hello and thanks to Posh Olly.
I took a subscription to switchlink.co.uk because it is uk based and gives good value per pound.
BUT.
The template they use is no good for Olly's scripts. For a start, there's no nameservers or DNS thingy. The only thing they offer is reverseDNS. Nothing else. Nowt.
The scripts are taking a lot of work to polish up. E.g. there is no aptitude installed, you have to update and then install aptitiude.
I don't mind too much because I wanted to get stuck in and learn this ancient and quaint Martian language. (Been avoiding Unix for decades)So....
Love your work Guv, though I must say, I think your site is pants! Errr, I mean the layout and links and stuff, bit of work to do there. As for content, effort, usefulness, etc. it's the best on the web - ten out of ten so I forgive you<!>. In a world of holier-than-thou, snobby linux geeks this is a breath of warm, fresh spring air.
Thank you.Iggy

Hi Ian
Welcome.
Are you tied in with switchlink? As you could switch (pardon the pun) to another provider if you are just at the setting up stages.
I'm in th UK and use the sublime Bytemark - they have DNS servers you can use, its easy once you've done a few domains & everything just works a treat most of the time.
Only downer is they don't do a cheap 256mb plan as lots of people seem to be doing for 6 quid a month if thats the plan you are on.
But agree, content top notch - I always use the tag cloud to get around or google domain search, easier.

Cheers Ben,
no I'm not tied in and frankly I'm thinking of sacking them. So many of the Guv's scripts just don't work on there. I have had to analyse each step to see what the difference is which is good for learning but taking too long to get a production server.
I'm on £10 a month which gives quite good spec but it's obviously a very different build from the Linode boxes.
I'll take a look at Bytemark - I have heard other good reports.
I found some free dns/nameserver services at zerigo.com which I highly recommend and shall stick with them for that.
I like the idea of decoupling DNS, server and email. That way if my server fails I still get email and it helps anyway with potential troubleshooting.
Thanks for the advicePosted 1 year ago # -
Just for the record, in case anyone finds this through a search. I sacked Switchlink and can't recommend it for using the Guvnr's scripts.
It's probably fine for anyone who is fluent with Linux but even then the lack of nameservers and DNS services made for a lot of difficulty and, in my case, a lot of time wasted.Posted 1 year ago #
