WP plugin access
-
After installing several WP sites, I found that some plugins didn't work. I had to wpsafe (www-data) that actual folders where plugin images or caching was located. Access was needed to make the plugin in work.
Is that normal? Assuming I did all my permissions right for my userid who belongs to a group that has been usermod to www-data; what is the ideal permission?
I'm afraid to do wpsafe, for it will kill access to some plugins.

oops I meant WPupgrade (basically CHOWN) the plugin folders, not wpsafe. :)

I think this is correct - you may have to individually change permissions on certain plugin cache folders. I had to do this for wp-supercache for instance: it helpfully reminds you to do this from inside the dashboard.
As it stands I have got into the habit of using wpupgrade and wpsafe but do find it a pain when it comes to managing multiple sites (you have to change the domain name in .bashrc for each site).
I hope that at some point that Olly might do some tutorials on automating multiple WP site updates - hint hint!! :)

what plugins Anthony .. (caching, perchance? .. and ..)
Perry, yes, I'm working on a couple of approaches now - using SSH and using mod_ruid2 (kinda like SuPHP but faster) - because the bashrc commands tend to depend on too many variables to be a popular solution.

Sounds like Perry hit it! It does this with any cache plugin, Worker (by ManageWP), and some others.
Right now I have my own little guide that I walk through and just do a "replace" all in the editor to change the domain names.
Cool - keep us updated Olly! Thanks for all the awesome work - I'm going to buy your book soon!

BTW - I'm hoping that Cloudflare.com's services really live up to their marketing hype. If so, they cache and do the CDN all for you. Plus they are integrating Google Webmasters, Analytics, Pingdom and more!
