WPMU & Upgrades

I am using wpmu, and I installed vsftpd in order to log in to do plugin upgrades. However, when I try to do an upgrade, I receive the following errors:

Downloading update from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/advertising-manager.3.4.19.zip.
Unpacking the update.
Could not create directory /home/public_html/mulyoo.com/public/wp-content/upgrade/advertising-manager.tmp
Updating plugin 2 of 10...
Downloading update from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/cd-bp-avatar-bubble.0.9.1.zip.
Unpacking the update.
Could not create directory /home/public_html/mulyoo.com/public/wp-content/upgrade/cd-bp-avatar-bubble.tmp
I've tried changing permissions and ownership and have had no luck. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
